2018 Annual Conference
Charlotte, NC | February 22-25, 2018

Statement from the ACCA Executive Council

Like many national organizations, ACCA has been wrestling with planning a conference in a state that has undesirable legislation toward marginalized groups of people, and while North Carolina has since repealed the legislation, there are some states that continue to ban travel to NC. Our Executive Council has had many discussions about this and decided to stay for one reason. In the ACA Code of Ethics counselors are called to advocate for and stand with our clients. Ultimately the ACCA Executive Council, with the support of ACA, decided to stand with our college counseling colleagues and the LGBTQI+ community in North Carolina. Our conference will feature education around these issues and support of marginalized communities.

Who We Are

The American College Counseling Association is made up of diverse mental health professionals from the fields of counseling, psychology, and social work. Our common theme is working within higher education settings.

ACCA membership includes professionals and student members who work largely in college counseling settings. There are a growing number of community college counseling professionals who comprise the second largest group within ACCA. Members hold primarily a master’s or doctoral degree with the largest group being master’s level professionals. Counselor educators and Supervisors are also part of ACCA membership.

Congratulations to our colleagues and members at North Carolina State in the Counseling Center on their recent Emmy Award in the Public Affairs category.  Their video, #StopTheStigma, produced in conjunction with Durham-based StoryDriven, was recognized by the National Academy of TelevisionArts & Sciences in January.  The video features students talking about suicide and began as an outreach effort, by two NCSU counseling center Social Workers. NCSU is led by former ACCA President Monica Z. Osburn.
