Journal of College Counseling

Guidelines for Authors

The Journal of College Counseling is published twice yearly. If you wish to contribute, please contact the editor, Dr. Laura Hensley Choate, at jcc-editor@lsu.edu or by phone at (225) 578-1248.

The Journal of College Counseling publishes articles that inform the practice of counselors working in higher education settings. All manuscripts should be clear and well organized in development and presentation of ideas and information. These manuscripts may fall into one of three categories:

Innovative Practice articles briefly describe an innovative practice in counseling in higher education settings. These articles should not exceed 1200 words in length and should provide a clear description of the innovative method, technique, approach, or program, along with appropriate rationale and recommendations for implementation in professional practice.

Professional Issues articles should present in-depth analysis and discussion of current issues related to the practice of counselors in higher education settings. These articles must include a critical review of literature and research related to the topic and discuss implications for professional practice and future research. Professional Issues manuscripts should not exceed 18 pages in length, including references, tables, and figures.

Research Studies may include both quantitative and qualitative studies and should follow APA guidelines for content and format. These articles should include implications for professional practice and future research and should not exceed 18 pages in length, including references, tables, and figures.

All manuscripts should include a 50-75 word abstract and should be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th ed.). APA guidelines should be followed for all aspects of manuscripts, including: format of manuscript, figures, tables, references and citations, and other details of editorial style. In accordance with guidelines on language, authors should use gender-equitable terms and should avoid wording that would imply bias against individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, age, religious persuasion, economic status, or ability. Authors of original research studies are required to report the demographic composition of the participants and are encouraged to obtain samples of participants that are representative of social diversity or else delimit the target population to a specific group. Authors are encouraged to report data in terms of effect sizes and are required to discuss the practical significance of results for practitioners in college counseling settings.

Tables and figures should be kept to a minimum. Include only essential data, combine tables wherever possible, and avoid duplication of information in text. Figures should be submitted as clean, camera-ready art in sans serif type no smaller than 8 points. Do not use footnotes.

Lengthy quotations (generally 500 cumulative words or more from one source) require written permission from the copyright holder for reproduction. It is the author's responsibility to secure such permission, and a copy of the publisher's written permission must be provided to the Editor immediately upon acceptance for publication.

Manuscripts should be submitted in electronic format (MS Word, WordPerfect, RTF, or DOS Text) as an email attachment sent to  jcc-editor@lsu.edu or as a file saved to a 3.5 inch diskette and mailed to:

The submitting author's name and the software used must be clearly labeled on the diskette. Submissions that do not adhere to these Guidelines for Authors will be returned without review. Authors whose manuscripts have been accepted for publication should also provide their final version in electronic format. ACA Publications Department will provide authors with a computer printout of the edited article for their final review prior to publication. Authors bear full responsibility for the accuracy of all references, figures, and tables.

The Journal of College Counseling uses an anonymous review system. Authors should include names and affiliations on a separate title page only, and make every effort to submit a manuscript that provides no clues to authors' identity.

Never submit material that has been previously published or that is under consideration by another publication.
